The personality of every casino is the poker room!! This is one place in a casino where people sit together, socialize and become one. It is a place where we make friends, lifelong acquaintances and befriend the staff on a personal level. The name tags don’t exist after awhile and we get to know one another’s names. Not all casinos have a poker room but for those that do, you will realize this to be true.
Online has the same camaraderie on a different level but for brick and mortar, this is the place that has personality! You can be at a quiet table, you can be at a loud table, they change quickly. The floor people get to know your name, the dealers get to know you and you get to know each other. It doesn’t “FEEL” like the rest of the casino. Casinos can be great fun outside the poker room but it is usually with alone or with a group of friends. It is a little less friendly but the poker rooms are usually met with greetings and personal charm. This is where people congregate before they get a seat, socializing with others on the rail and having coffee and telling poker stories or life stories.
This is a place where you hear bad beats, big wins and horrifying losses. It is also a place where the oddest hands take place. For instance, in one hand in Edmonton Alberta, my friend was the poker room manager and encountered this one hand. Now remember, we are not all perfect and that human error is often the reason for the pit or house being called over to make a ruling. Some are second nature and the answers are clear. However, on the other side – for you to understand how difficult it can be to act as judge and jury – here is hand that was difficult to rule:
There were 5 players in the pot preflop. By the river, one man bet out and the rest of the table folded. After all the hands were mucked – the dealer, the player who bet and the players who folded ALL realized that the guy who bet had NO CARDS. He had cards at the beginning of the hand, but at some point around the turn, the dealer mucked his cards. Who wins this pot? What would YOU do?
